Out and About STEM is a project at the University of Sussex started by Dr Katy Petherick. Our mission is to promote the visibility of LGBT+ people in STEM. We raise the profile of LGBT+ members of staff and students during public-facing activities by wearing LGBT+ scientist badges during outreach activities. We also promote the visibility of LGBT+ members by featuring LGBT+ scientists on our social media channels. Furthermore, we have written blogs for special occasions, such as
LGBT+ history month and
Trans Day of Visibility, which were featured on the Biochemist blog. We received funding for this project from a
Biochemical Society Diversity in Science grant. We have now also received funding from the Schools of Psychology, Engineering and Informatics, and Mathematical and Physical Sciences of the University of Sussex.
